Fablok 6D (another designation: SM42 series) is a series of standard-gauge diesel shunting locomotives, which were produced in the years 1963-1993 at the Fablok plant in Chrzanów. The service weight of a single locomotive is 70 tons, and its length with buffers is 14.24 m. The average of the wheels is 1100 mm, with the Bo'Bo axis system.
The SM42 series locomotive was designed and developed at the "Tabor" Research and Development Center in Poznań in the years 1958-1962. From the beginning, it was assumed that it would be intended for heavy shunting works on Polish railways and in heavy industry. It was assumed to a lesser extent that it would be intended for hauling light freight trains. The a8C22 engine with 800 hp was used as the drive, making the SM42 the first Polish shunting locomotive with a really high rated power for this type of rail vehicle. The locomotive had an electric transmission. The SM42 series locomotives have been modernized many times in several centers throughout Poland and are currently the most popular diesel engine in our country.
